his is a subject we may not often think about. The little symbols that make up this sentence are so deeply etched into our minds it's almost impossible not to hear them. But how did these form come to be and how has technology changed and evolved them? From the book..."There could not have been a Reformation, an Enlightenment, and an Industrial Revolution if there had not been this revolutionary technologising of the alphabet… Nevertheless, though this technology gave, it also took. The alphabet is frozen in the Roman and Carolingian shapes it was in when type came along. Our orthography is so deeply embedded into our systems that although we will not lose it, we cannot change it."

Is there really a difference between Pepsi and Coke? In a world where the difference between products sometimes comes down to branding and packaging how people feel about your product is the point of differentiation. Even if you are not in the business of creating products and services per se, this is a book everyone can enjoy. In addition to expanding the way you think about the role of design in your life, it will help you to be a delighted consumer.

ubberly has made a career out of designing design. This book examines design processes that the Dubberly Design Studio has collected over the years. The premise? "Everyone designs. The teacher arranging desks for a discussion. The entrepreneur planning a business. The team building a rocket."
Although the book is unfinished you can download a PDF for free, and also add to the book by submitting your own design processes.
This book is highly recommended - we had the privilege of attending a Hugh Dubberly lecture a few years ago and the clarity and depth of thought were astounding. We keep his Map of a Brand on the studio wall at all times.

  • Helping other people helps me.
  • Organizing a charity group is surprisingly easy.
  • Everything I do always comes back to me.
  • Drugs feel great in the beginning and become a drag later on.

n-your-face, achingly simple, deceptively frank, the work of Christopher Wool is so very New York. Though he owes a debt to abstract expressionism and pop art, he completely transcends—even demolishes—these genres. Whether it’s a text-based painting or an abstract spray-painted piece, his work is immediately engaging. Wool questions painting, like many other artists in his generation, but he doesn’t provide any easy answers. “The harder you look the harder you look,” as he titled one of his word paintings, is an excellent example of how he states the obvious whilst provoking us to think deeper about what seems obvious.

In this book collections determine floor plans, observatories are built for starry rural nights, and found and industrial materials such as highway construction remnants, laboratory counters, plastic water bottles, and discarded chalkboards keep costs low while imbuing structures with character. These ingenious designs range in cost from $50 to $220 per square foot.

fter discovering that photographer Julius Schulman possessed an almost complete collection of Arts & Architecture magazines from the 1940s, 50's and 60's, innovative art book publisher Benedikt Taschen, was inspired to produce a facsimile edition. A&A is, after all, widely credited for putting American architecture - and in particular, California Modernism - on the map, so to speak. John Entenza, the magazine’s editor back in those heady post World War II days, filled the pages with projects by the era’s architectural stars, including Neutra, Schindler, Saarinen, Ellwood, Lautner, Eames, and Koenig. The magazine initiated the now legendary Case Study House Program which showcased designers using new technologies and materials. It is interesting also, to look at the issues that feature the early works of today’s starchitects such Frank Gehry and Richard Meier. This month, the first 10-box set, which includes every issue from 1945 through 1954 reprinted in its entirety, goes on sale. A second set, 1955 through 1967, is scheduled for release next fall.
